Can You Drink Coffee While Pregnant? And How to Avoid Heartburn

Is it okay to drink coffee while you’re pregnant? What’s a safe level of caffeine when you’re pregnant? And how can you prevent heartburn while drinking coffee?

For many women, pregnancy is the time when they are most worried about eating healthy. At the same time, there are extra challenges, such as frequent heartburn or lack of energy. Here’s how to drink coffee while pregnant and avoid heartburn. Be sure to ask your doctor about safe levels of caffeine and anything else you are worried about during pregnancy.

Safe Level of Caffeine During Pregnancy

There is no known safe level of caffeine during pregnancy (but don’t get worried yet). Many experts put the number at around 200 mg of caffeine per day. That’s the amount in about 2 small (6-ounce) cups of coffee per day, or 1 medium (12-ounce) cup. It’s less than the amount you might get in an order of coffee from a coffee shop (but it’s still not time to panic).

How to Cut Back on Caffeine

One way to cut back on caffeine is to replace some of your caffeinated coffee with decaf or half-caff versions. That’s easy when you use Alex’s Acid Free Coffee. It comes in Regular, Half Caff, and Decaf varieties. Each one has the same great-tasting blend of high-quality beans, including from the Chiapas region of Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua. With decaf, you can still have the comforting, enjoyable coffee you love without exposing the embryo to caffeine.

But what if you depend on caffeine for a boost of energy from caffeine? During pregnancy, you may be even more tired than ever! But there are other ways to increase energy, such as the following.

  • Getting more sleep. You may need extra naps while you’re pregnant.
  • Exercising, such as walking, as long as your healthcare provider gives you clearance.
  • Eating small snacks with carbohydrates and protein at regular intervals to maintain blood sugar levels.

If you feel excessively tired or have trouble cutting back on caffeine, talk to your doctor for more guidance.

Low-Acid Coffee to Avoid Heartburn

Beside the baby’s safety, another reason to limit caffeine during pregnancy is because it can trigger acid reflux and heartburn. If coffee’s a trigger for heartburn, you might also want to switch to a reduced acid brand, such as Alex’s Acid Free Coffee. It has less chlorogenic acid than many national brands and as a bonus for your baby, it is certified organic.

More Tips for Avoiding Heartburn While Pregnant

In addition to choosing a reduced acid coffee, such as Alex’s Acid Free Coffee, these are some tips for reducing heartburn while pregnant.

  • Drinking between meals instead of with them.
  • Limiting fatty foods.
  • Having smaller meals.
  • Not eating too close to bedtime.

Pregnancy is a challenging but exciting time, and you want to do it right! Using Alex’s Acid Free Coffee lets you have a low-acid coffee and gives you the ability to reduce caffeine intake. It also can be part of a plan to avoid heartburn.
